Fixed vs portable gas detectors: a selection guide.

Compare installation, sampling and data requirements before choosing a gas measurement format.

Choose around the measurement workflow

Fixed and portable gas instruments answer different operational questions. Begin by describing where measurements are required, when they are needed and how people will act on the readings. Then consider the gas, range, sampling conditions and installation constraints. Product categories alone do not determine whether an instrument meets a particular site requirement.

When to consider fixed gas detectors

A fixed detector is installed at a defined location. Consider this format when the project calls for gas measurement at an established monitoring point and integration with site equipment. Identify the mounting location, available power, signal destination and maintenance access. The exact sensor, output interface and installation method must match the proposed model and project design.

When to consider a portable gas detector

A portable instrument moves with the measurement task. It can support inspections and sampling at different locations without installing an instrument at each point. The GIOT IOBG900 series includes an internal sampling pump, a color display, an English menu option, local alarm modes, measurement records and export. A VOC configuration is available. Confirm the gas and required range before selecting the instrument.

Selection question Fixed installation Portable instrument
Where is the measurement made? At planned installation points At the locations reached during the measurement task
What needs to be specified? Mounting, power, output interface and site integration Target gas, range, sampling accessories and handling workflow
How will readings be used? Define the destination and use of the detector output Define local display, records and export requirements

Check the complete sampling arrangement

Provide details of the sampling point, access distance, expected gas concentration and relevant environmental conditions. For a pumped portable instrument, ask about the proposed probe or tube and its suitability for the target gas. For a fixed installation, review the selected location and how the measurement will represent the intended area. These details should be resolved with the model-specific documentation and project design.

Review the exact model before ordering

Ask for the sensor specification, range, response characteristics, calibration requirements, operating limits and applicable certification for the proposed configuration. Confirm how alarm modes or outputs will be used in the complete system. A representative product photo or series overview does not replace the documentation for the ordered instrument.

Can one replace the other?

A portable detector should not be assumed to replace a fixed installation, or the reverse, solely because both measure the same gas. Some projects use both formats for different tasks. Explain the required coverage and measurement workflow so the selection can be reviewed in context. Any safety-related application also needs the appropriate site assessment and equipment specifications.
